Places and Structures
Vasilena Gankovska, Sofia/Vienna
Vasilena Gankovska was born in 1978 in Troyan. After her graduation from the National Art Academy Sofia in 2001 she continued her art studies in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Currently lives and works in Vienna and Sofia.
The urban space, the architectural structures and their interrelations are part of Gankovska’s visual research. By using different media like painting, drawing or the typical for the street art stencils, the artist represents structures, places and objects related to the everyday life, the leisure industry or the representative architecture and its symbols.

Places and Structures 2013, collage, plexiglas boxes
Vasilena Gankovska explores the paradoxes of the urban environment. Nowadays, there are hardly existing regulatory mechanisms and transparency. Cities look like an accumulation of many different structures, whose elements unpredictably interweave to produce new ones. The artist thematizes the iconic status of Chifte Banya (The Ancient Bath) - a monument from a bygone era, which has a completely new function. The building is literally and metaphorically standing at the crossroads of two socio-political systems.
