The Baba Vasa's Cellar, Shabla

Founded in 2002, Baba Vasa's Cellar is a non-commercial space for contemporary art, located in Shabla, a town in Northern Bulgaria with 4500 inhabitants. The exhibition space of 10 square meters is situated in the cellar of an old house and follows the architectonic principle of the white cube. Baba Vasa's Cellar exists thanks to the hospitality of an 84 years old lady and the enthusiasm of a permanently growing group of artists from different nationalities. During its first 10 years of existence the Cellar presented works of over 30 artists and the yearly openings are accompanied by a garden party with DJ line.

Baba Vasa's Cellar does not pretend to be of any importance. The smallest space in a small provincial town in a small country looks for its public in the first place among the local people, speaks in dialect, works with tiny budget, improvises and enjoys the nature. The Cellar is satisfied with the pleasure of creating and having a good time. However it also feels responsible for stimulating the individual development and seeks to decentralise the contemporary art scene in the country.
