Peter Tzanev is Professor of Art Psychology at the National Academy of Art, Sofia. His publications include Psychological Approaches to the History of Art (2009) and Psychology of Art (2008).

Stanislav Pamukchiev is Professor at the National Academy of Art, Sofia. Among his awards are the National Award for Painting Zahari Zograf (2004) and Grand Prize of the International Painting Triennial, Sofia (1996).

THE DEBATE ON REALITY

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN PAINTING AND SCULPTURE

The book The Debate on Reality presents the largest project carried out so far in Bulgaria dedicated to the development of Bulgarian painting and sculpture in the second decade of the 21st century. The authors of the project have accepted the challenge to offer complete analysis of the world views dominating today’s Bulgarian art.

The book is composed of two parts. The first one is a catalogue of the works included in the exhibition The Debate on Reality – Contemporary Bulgarian Painting and Sculpture that took place in Sofia from 5 December 2017 to 12 January 2018 in the exhibition space of the Union of the Bulgarian Artists (UBA) at 6 Shipka street; and then from 15 May to 18 June 2018 at the Rayko Alexiev Gallery.

The second part of the book consists of texts by the curators Stanislav Pamukchiev, Peter Tzanev and Kiril Vassilev offering critical assessments of the current processes and trends in contemporary Bulgarian painting and sculpture.

The book has been supported by the Gaudenz B. Ruf Award.

The Project The Debate on Reality received support within the Cultural Calendar of the Sofia Municipality.
